Meet Pavel, M10c’s newest full-time Back-End developer, as he shares with us his background and experience which led to his career in software development.
What do you do at M10c?
I’m a back-end developer, which means I build systems that handle data in the background for apps and websites.
What inspired you to start programming?
I was into gaming when I was a teenager and I needed to create a website for my team. When I started working on the website I discovered that learning programming and creating small helper scripts is quite fun and that’s how I got hooked. But it’s not until I joined an e-commerce startup that I started considering software development as a possible career choice. I guess being surrounded by developers and seeing what they do inspired me to become a software developer myself.
Could you describe the main challenges of a back-end developer?
I think the main challenges are the same as with any type of software development – you have to constantly keep learning new things and keep persisting when something doesn’t work until you get it right.
What do you enjoy most about being a back-end developer?
Back-end is the heart of any system. It brings functionality and data to apps. When I build something for myself I rarely care to create any graphical user interface for it because I only care about functionality. Being a back-end developer allows me to fully focus on functionality and let someone else take care of graphical user interfaces.
What are the values that drive you?
When I was a child, I’d always take my toys apart to see what was inside and how it worked (I rarely managed to put them back together). I guess this feeling of curiosity and desire to understand how things work has remained with me and that’s what drives me.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I like to read up about things on Quora or Reddit. I also try to read a self-help book once in a while. I’m currently re-reading “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg. I like to visit a new places and cities whenever possible. I recently visited Bournemouth – nice beach. In addition, I try to stay fit by exercising and/or cycling regularly.
